BACKGROUND
From the myths and stereotypes that bombard Black females as girls and stay with them through
adulthood, to narrow definitions of beauty and "acceptable" behavior, the average Black woman is constantly battling to develop and maintain a healthy self-image.
 
FILM SYNOPSIS
Illuminations, Volume I: Outside Looking In
"Illuminations" is a documentary series about the lives of Black women. "Illuminations" brings to
light a diverse collection of perspectives and voices with the goal of painting an accurate picture
of the beauty of Black women and the complexity of their lives.
In Volume I of the series, "Outside Looking In", the legacy of skin color bias, politics of hair and body image and standards of beauty are explored.  In individual interviews and Sister Circle discussions, black women share their individual struggles with issues that have had historical significance in America, and throughout the world, for centuries. The stories, discussions, and narratives share a range of emotions, from the laughter of recognition to the pain of shared struggles.
